From Fantasy to Dream
April 30th, 2006 | by Molly's Brother |We’re a celebrity driven culture. Americans live shackled to the fantasy of how we think our futures will unfold. But if we stepped away from this fantasy, we could be elevated by the wonderful reality of our lives as they could exist. The sooner we realize that we won’t have “Oprah Money” or that we will never be among the few celebrities who show the obligatory “fridge shot” on MTV’s Cribs, the freer and more liberated our lives will be. Instead of focusing intensely on what we don’t have, exchange that negative energy and turn it into a celebration of what we do have. Can you imagine a day without the massive amount of credit card debt that was run up because you wanted to mirror clothes Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey wore (either pre- or post-divorce)?
There is a rarely discovered sense of freedom that comes with a zero balance.
No credit card debt–or at least a manageable level–allows you to drift away from the fantasy of your life and focus on The American Dream. Money that isn’t being sent to MBNA or Chase or American Express at ridiculous interest rates turns into money that will be dropped into an emergency fund, a savings account for a down payment on a house, or–as corporate America eliminates pension plans–it can be invested for retirement.
Destroy your fantasy. Destroy it now. And start building your dream life.
