Update on Yesterday’s Goal

June 5th, 2006 | by Molly's Brother |

To provide an update on yesterday’s goal: I failed. Miserably. At midday, I realized that I was doing pretty well. About $7.00 spent on a subway sandwich. And then, after work, I went out for dinner. Too lazy to shop for groceries. Too lazy to even stop by the grocery store to pick up one of those pre-cooked chickens.

Thirty-four dollars and ninety-eight cents later, I remembered that I put this goal out for the world to see yesterday. And I felt bad.

Not bad enough to spend another $12.00 on drinks. But I still felt bad.

As Ms. Scarlett said, “After all, tomorrow is another day.” Or something like that.

It happens. Don’t expect to change spending behaviors over night. But it sounds like you still are doing a good job…

I have trouble not going out for dinner too. Here’s something I’ve learned (although I have to keep reminding myself about it):

If you want to eat at home, you need to have an easy dinner planned at home. Who wants to go grocery shopping after work when you’re already tired and hungry? (And going shopping when you’re hungry is generally a bad idea anyway–both from a saving money and an eating healthy point of view.)

So sometime during the week (when you’re not tired and hungry) plan out as many dinners as you want to eat at home that week. You don’t really need detailed plans. Just buy lots of salad stuff and prepare a couple of things ahead of time–things like a pasta salad or a rice pilaf that can work as a side dish for fish, a chicken breast, a hamburger, or whatever you like to eat for dinner.

Then when you are leaving work, knowing you can, for instance, quickly grill a chicken breast and have a salad and some rice pilaf, you will be more likely to be able to resist the temptation of going to the restaurant.
