The End Is Near
By Molly's Brother | June 14, 2006
In my spare time, I like to pretend that I am an economist, a sociologist, a political scientist and every other social scientist that tries to apply their “inexact sciences” to predict future trends. Well, if I may, I want to offer up this prediction: Things don’t exactly feel right. From my end, on a personal level, it looks like we’re entering into a recession.
Why? All the social indicators are pointing to this, aren’t they. I’ll leave the deconstruction of financial and economic trends to those other personal finance bloggers who know how to read the market and who know exactly how a raise in interest rates can positively/negatively affect the larger economy. The social indicators I use are the front page of national newspapers or reputable news outlets on the Internet. Just taking a quick glance at today’s CNN.com, the following headlines cause me concern:
- 2,100 illegal immigrants arrested in sweep
- Tourists stabbed in New York attacks
- New fear: A Fed gone too far
And from ABCNews.com
- Consumer Confidence Tops Recent Lows
- Hicks Tops People’s ‘Hot Bachelor’ List (Sorry–that’s for my “Sign of the Apocalypse” post…)
On top of all this, our local ABC or NBC affiliate here in Los Angeles is doing a report on the increase in gang memberships in our inner cities.
Granted, this is just a smattering of stories that were reported today on two websites. However, I’ve been noticing that there is an increasing amount of social unrest among citizens of this country. Using immigrants as scapegoats. Tourists getting attacked. These are the sorts of things that don’t happen as frequently when the economy is sailing right along.
Okay, I’ll take my social scientist hat off now and return to being an HIV/AIDS educator.

Nothing inexact about economists. Economists have clearly predicted 9 of the last 5 recessions.
