Free Things to Do in NYC
By Molly's Brother | June 21, 2006
I am heading across the country to New York City next week. I am so excited to see the city and to see friends I can barely contain it. I am a California boy through-and-through, but I try to get to New York at least once a year. There’s something wonderfully energetic and real and current about that city.
There’s also something ghastly and horribly expensive about it, too.
I was researching finding tickets to a Broadway show. The most expensive tickets I found for the seats I want clocked in at a cool $325. Yeesh. (I know about the TKTS stand. Hopefully, I’ll get lucky there.)
This morning, as I was surfing the net, I came across Fodor’s Top 25 Free New York Experiences. Without even reading the post, I thought to myself, “This already sounds boring.” But as I skimmed the list, I realized how important it is to sometimes experience the other side of a city. All too often, I rush from costly activity to costly activity when I am traveling. Rarely do I spend an entire day to stop a smell the FREE roses.
This list had some wonderful ideas, like walking across the Brooklyn Bridge (I have never thought of doing that) or visit the Reading Room at the New York City Public Library (I have always meant to do that). It also lists some activities that sound pretty cool that I would never have known about–like kayaking on the Hudson River. This list also mentions the “free days” at a couple museums and zoos.
All-in-all, a fantastic list. It has further shaped my plans–and my budget–for next week’s vacation. (By the way, I always end up spending more money that I intend to when I am in NYC. However, this is the financially new and improved me…so we’ll see what happens. Stay tuned.)
I talked about this awhile back, but this list reminded me that free activities are all around us. With the summer season officially here, most cities and communities offer free events to the public. Take some time to research what your community has to offer.
