‘Tis the Season: Some ideas for inexpensive outings

I know there are a ton of social expectations and responsibilities this time of the year. And every time you walk out of the front door, your wallet seems to be pulled out of your pocket and cash starts flying everywhere. However, there are still ways to have a social life this time of year without spending too much money.
TURN OLD TRADITIONS INTO [tag]CREATIVE DATES[/tag]
There are so many things that “have to be done” this time of year. With a little forethought though, you can make these obligations fun and light-hearted. For example, getting a tree can be a huge pain in the neck–especially if you plan on getting the tree and decorating it in the same night.
My suggestion: Get the tree and let it sit in your house undecorated overnight. And then, the following night, turn it into a holiday party for two (or, if you have kids, for your whole family). Cook dinner. Get a bottle of wine. Make hot apple cider for your kids. Put your favorite Christmas-themed CD on while you decorate your tree. What can turn into a moment of stress has been transformed into an evening of levity.
CREATE NEW TRADITIONS
Although free nights can be rare during the holiday season, put aside a night or two for you and your family. It can be an inexpensive night, for sure. Do a little research and find out what is offered in your community during this time of the year. Is there a free Christmas in the Park, a free Festival of Lights, an inexpensive outdoor/indoor ice rink in your area? Sure there is.
Afterwards, go to a nearby department story and have everyone pick out an ornament. Not only is this a great way to add to your Christmas decorations but, speaking from childhood experiences, it’s a great way to create Christmas memories.
HAVE A CHRISTMAS THEMED FILM FESTIVAL
Too many company parties? Too many holiday dinners with family or friends? Just too many social responsibilities? Feeling burned out? Then turn your attention indoors. Ask your loved one to pick out their favorite Christmas-themed DVD and have an evening at home. (By the way, if you don’t have a favorite DVD, in my opinion watch this one. It’s so bad, it’s good. It’s that bad.)
December is an expensive month. No one can debate that. However, with a little thought and a heightened sense of creativity, it’s not that difficult to have an inexpensive–yet memorable–evening.
