Identity Theft: Immigration Raids Target ID Thieves

December 13th, 2006 | by Molly's Brother |

Minutes ago, I posted news on the breach of the UCLA database, putting the identity of nearly 800,000 people at risk. As I was about to head off for the day, I noticed this article posted on MSNBC.com: ID Thieves Targeted in Immigration Raids.

A year long investigation culminated today in the raid on six meat processing plants across the Midwest. All the plants are now temporarily closed due to the investigation.

“ICE chief Julie L. Myers told reporters in Washington that agents had uncovered a scheme in which illegal immigrants and others had stolen or bought the identities and Social Security numbers of possibly hundreds of U.S. citizens and lawful residents to get jobs with Greeley-based meat processor Swift & Co.” (MSNBC.com December 12, 2006)

Lesson of the day is vigilance with your own financial records.
