Make Money Wherever You Can, part 3

December 17th, 2007 | by Molly's Brother |

Previously, I’ve explored some ways to make a little money or a little bit more money. This morning, I want to encourage you to find ways to make substantial amounts of money. I am tired of reading these personal finance sites that operate off the assumption that lower- and middle- class Americans are destined to live out the entirety of their lives within static socio-economic boundaries. If you feel like you have the drive, the desire, and the resources to make more substantially more money–then do it!

1. Play with your fantasy. Sit with yourself for a few days and figure out what your fantasy job would be (don’t forget your fantasy income). Visualize what that would look like. Write down specific visions that you see in this fantasy world. Get excited about your life again! After you’ve spent a couple of days doing that, set the brainstorm aside and let your ideas percolate.

2. Deal with the reality. When you revisit your fantasy, it’s time to face the reality. In order to get to the point of your dreams, what do you need to do? Do you need to go back to school? Do you need to save some money to invest in a part-time business? What are the next steps that need to be taken? Write it down. Figure it out. Develop a plan.

3. Follow your dreams…but don’t quit your day job. As you begin to slowly implement the plan, jump into it with reckless abandon. Be passionate about your new project or your new direction, just don’t quit your day job (yet). There will be some expected set backs and room for growth. It may end up being a business that brings in an additional 10%, 30% or 50% of what you own OR you could end up making a lovely career change.

I work in a profession where we do not focus on deficits. We focus on strengths. The same should be said for your attitude in your life. Now go out and start planning to live the life you’ve dreamed.
